The residents of the Floroma Old Aged Home were recently thoroughly spoiled by the members of the Charity Begins with Me team.
Stephan Ferreira, the founder of Charity Begins with Me, explained, “In 2016, we started an initiative, where we visited the old age home once a month with some love and sweet treats. I have a group of people (volunteers) that help me with these treats, which include everything from fudge to cupcakes, samoosas and muffins. We put everything together, ensure we have enough for everyone, and visit them either on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon”.
He added that the residents now enjoy their visits so much, that they even put in a special request or two, “Sometimes they ask for milk tart or maybe a chocolate cake. And, beware if you forgot to bring along the koeksisters!”
Stephan said that this visit was the last one for 2018, and, in a bid to make it a bit more special, he requested the youngsters to make some Christmas cards. “We had quite a good response, and we were able to give every resident a beautiful handmade card as well.”
During the monthly visits, the team also has a lucky draw where the residents can win chocolates, cookies and much more, and, according to Stephan, this creates quite a bit of excitement.
“At the end of the day, all they really want is a bit of company and love. And, of course they enjoy the delicious treats too! And, when the tea and formalities are concluded, out comes the Tupperware to ensure some leftovers are taken home,” Stephan concluded.
