Disabilities turned into abilities

Differently abled learners were entertained by a fast-moving, high-energy, wheelchair dance performance.

In celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Miracle on Wheels, in conjunction with Nakshatra (an organisation for the disabled) and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, held a dance show at Kloofendal Nature Reserve.

On behalf of Ward 85’s councillor, Sonja Meyer, Dr Florence Roberts, who is a leadership coach, group facilitator and communications specialist, gave a welcoming speech to everyone.

The show aimed to empower persons with disabilities and to ensure inclusiveness and equality. About 250 differently abled learners were invited to be entertained by a fast-moving, high-energy wheelchair dance performance that is globally renowned. The learners were motivated by seeing what other differently abled people can do with their bodies.

To make the event possible, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo partnered with Ability Unlimited, an organisation based in Delhi, India, that showcases a delicate and most intricate piece of dance performed solely by differently abled persons, and Nakshatra SA and the IADA (Indian Arts Development Agency).
