KJK judoka selected to represent South Africa

‘It is a great honour to have been chosen as part of Team South Africa’

Sensei Katja Bruwer, from the KJK Judo Club will be accompanying one of her judokas as part of the South African team that will be competing in Botswana.

She explained, “One of my judokas, Harm Venter, was selected to be part of the Africa Union Sport Council Region 5 U/20 games, where he will be competing against athletes from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland.”

She added that the games take place every two years, and there will be 220 South African athletes from various sporting codes, including athletics (including visually impaired), basketball, boxing, football, judo, netball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

Harm said, “I am extremely honoured to be part of the SA team, as this is an indication that my hard work for the past year has definitely paid off. And, to know that it was not only Judo SA that was involved in the selection, but also the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), makes it just that little bit sweeter.”

He added that he was quite excited to compete against judokas from the other competing countries and be able to show what he is made of.

Katja said that this tournament was a very special tournament to compete in as it could be used as a starting block to make a name for yourself. “It is very good exposure for young athletes, and, if they fight hard and do well, it can open many doors for them in the future.”

The last games were held in 2016 in Angola, and Team SA ended the games in the first position, with a total of 123 medals.
