Charity Begins with Me needs help to feed the hungry

'Please consider buying one box of soup or instant oats when you do your Christmas shopping this year'

Stephan Ferreira, the founder of Charity Begins with Me, feeds more than 950 underprivileged children weekly, but, without some help from the community, he might have to stop.

“There are a little more than seven weeks left of 2018, and I think it is safe to say that this has been one of the craziest and busiest years in the history of Charity Begins with Me. I have once again decided to continue with the feeding scheme throughout the festive season, but, unfortunately, this is the worst time for us as donations are few and far between,” he explained.

He added that, even though he does not want to let the 950 children who depend on him down, there is a real possibility of that happening, and he said, “I simply cannot afford to pay for this out of my own pocket – believe me, I have tried. For now, we are barely surviving every week, and it is becoming extremely difficult to make ends meet.”

Stephan said that their biggest immediate need is soup and individual sachets of oats – instant meals that the children can make anywhere by just using tap water. “Please consider buying just one box when you do your Christmas shopping this year,” he pleaded.

They are in need of the following items:

• Fizzers

• Individual sachets of Oatso-Easy

• Soup Powder (50g)

• Nik Naks (Balers 50 x 20g @ Makro / Sunrise Sweets)

• Hand-washing powder

• Jik/ bleach

• Purity

• Ziploc Bags (size 180 x 180 or bigger @ Westpack)

• Soya Mince

• Rice (500g)

• Cans of food

• Wet/ Dry dog and cat food

• Wool/ knitting needles

• Soccer balls

• Hula hoops

• Chalk

• Bubbles

• Second-hand clothing

• Second-hand shoes

• Linen

• Curtains

• Pillows

• Sanitary pads

• Baby items/ products

• Nappies

• Non-perishable food items

He concluded by saying, “We can use literally anything you do not need anymore, so go on, clean those closets, donate your old toys, get rid of those old jeans you no longer fit into, and, most importantly – sponsor a meal, if you can.”
