Bowlers from as far as the Free State made the trek to Ruimsig Country Club for the annual Ruimsig Classic.
Ruimsig Country Club’s (RCC) premier bowls competition and the highlight of its bowls calendar year, the Ruimsig Classic took place on Saturday, 6 October and Sunday, 7 October. For many of the West Rand’s seasoned bowlers, the Classic has been one of the tournaments to look forward to every year. With weather reports earlier in the week indicating it would be cold and miserable the entire weekend, bowlers would have undoubtedly been worried about the weather. However, Mother Nature decided to play along and provide two absolutely stunning days of bright sunshine for the Classic. Sunshine wasn’t the only thing in abundance though, as the green-side water dispensers were filled up with ice water more times than a jack was hit by a bowler. Bowlers undoubtedly boiled in the heat which broke the 30°C barrier on both days, and needed to ensure they remained hydrated.
Players from Randburg, Krugersdorp, Discovery and even Bloemfontein made the trip to RCC to face off against each other and a number of RCC teams in a fours format. Even though their pride and glory were on the line, sportsmanship was never more than a compliment away.
After two gruelling days the winning teams were announced. Randburg dominated the weekend, as on Sunday three of their teams took podium positions.
