Two die in looting incident

Angry community members were looting the foreign-owned shop

Yesterday, two people lost their lives in an outbreak of violence relating to outlets selling expired food items to residents.

One of the victims was a 23-year-old male from Soweto, identified as Banele Qhayiso, who was apparently killed when he went to a shop allegedly selling expired items.

He was met with angry community members who were looting the foreign-owned shop because expired food and items with counterfeit labels were being sold.

In response to the situation, the shop owner is alleged to have opened fire‚ killing the young man.

“The fatalities in Soweto are evidence of what can happen when communities take the law into their own hands. I would like to urge residents to please work through official channels to expose these offenders,” said City of Johannesburg Health and Social Development MMC, Mpho Phalatse.

Residents are urged to always check expiry dates before purchasing food items. Expired food can be poisonous and harmful to one’s health which is why they were removed from the shelves and destroyed.
