Roodepoort Rugby Youth League day a success at Bastion

Hundreds of rugby boys played out 30 games of rugby in the Roodepoort Youth Rugby League on Saturday, 25 August.

Roodepoort Rugby Club’s Youth League saw hundreds of budding rugby stars from five different clubs lock horns with each other on Saturday, 25 August at Hoërskool Bastion.

They day saw little ones as young as six years old (U/7 age group) from Roodepoort, Western Cubs, and University of Johannesburg take each other on, with rugby balls virtually bigger than their heads. There were also little ones running about in the U/8 age group, albeit only from Roodepoort and Western Cubs.

Such is the love of Roodepoort’s U/7s and U/8s for rugby, that once their day of rugby was over, they hopped into various cars with moms and dads to go and support the first team at the University of the Witwatersrand in the Pirates Grand Challenge final.

The rest of the day was a heap of fun as well, as rugby stars in every age group right up to U/18 tackled the day’s challenges. The older age groups not only played 15-man rugby, but also enjoyed the quicker formats of 10-man and sevens rugby.

While Roodepoort’s sides struggled a bit in general, the U/16 team from Roodepoort managed to thump Western Cubs 57–7. The U/15 group was also fruitful for Poorte, as they managed to beat Western Cubs 22–10 in the 15-man format, and 31–15 in the sevens format.

For Roodepoort’s Youth Rugby chairman, Travis Tarr, the turnout was amazing. “It’s awesome to see this many people here supporting youth rugby. The children really appreciate the support when they’re out on the field,” he said.
