Identity of player unknown.

A local soccer start scored an own-goal after being arrested for speeding this past weekend.

A total of 31 motorists, including the Mamelodi Sundowns star, have been arrested for speeding in Gauteng during the weekend.

In a special high-speed operation conducted by the Gauteng Traffic Police’s High-Speed Unit, motorists were arrested for speeding at between 161km/ h and 219km/ h.

The 32-year-old soccer player was among those who were arrested on Sunday morning 29 July. He was driving his silver Toyota Quest on the N1 in Midrand at an average speed of 180km/ h in a 120km/ h zone. He claimed that he was rushing back to his home in Roodepoort after dropping off a friend in Centurion.

He was arrested on the spot and taken to the Midrand Police Station where he was formally charged with reckless driving and an alternative charge of exceeding the speed limit of 120km/ h on a freeway. He has been granted bail of R1 500 and will be appearing in the Midrand Magistrates’ Court soon.

The highest speed recorded during this weekend was on the N1 north of Pretoria where a driver of the Audi Q5 was caught doing 219km /h. He claimed that his farther had been admitted to a hospital in Polokwane, but it could not be confirmed.

The Department of Community Safety encourages drivers to adhere to the rules of the road. Reckless driving and excessive speeding are among the major contributors to fatal crashes on the province’s roads.

Gauteng Traffic Police and other law-enforcement agencies will continue to deal decisively with those who do not adhere to the rules of the road, particularly given the high rate of fatalities that the province continues to experience.
