Gauteng Provincial DA leader John Moody shares about Nelson Mandela

Gauteng Provincial DA leader, John Moodey, has played a prominent role in grooming Gauteng and we wanted to know if he was inspired by Nelson Mandela ...

“Yes, I was inspired by him. I had the honour and privilege of meeting Nelson Mandela at an event where he addressed the Trade Union Leaders at Shell House, shortly after his release from prison. He even shook my hand,” said Moodey.

He mentioned that it was quite an experience for him just to be in Mandela’s formidable presence. What inspired him most about Madiba was his willingness to put South Africa first.

“Let me explain … he understood that for the sake of peace and reconciliation, he should not bear grudges against his erstwhile oppressors who jailed him for 27 years; he should publicly express his forgiveness by going so far as to visit and befriend those who put him in jail,” he said.

“He was an inspiration, not only to the Springboks, but to the people of South Africa, when he put on Francois Pienaar’s #6 jersey after the first Rugby World Cup final the new democratic South Africa was contesting,” he added.

Moody’s favourite Mandela quote is, ‘If the ANC does to you what the Apartheid government did to you, then do to the ANC what you did to the Apartheid government’.
