Roodepoort athletes raring to go

68 athletes competing, with 13 first-timers

The Roodepoort Athletics Club’s Comrades marathon runners recently came together at the club for their annual Comrades braai, and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon together.

During this event, the athletes who will be running in various milestone marathons, as well as the first timers, received a special gift to help them with their preparation.

Dale Rynhoud can’t wait to start his 29th Comrades marathon.

The club has 68 runners participating this year, with 13 first-timers, four runners who will be doing a back-to-back marathon, three parent-and-child combinations and three husband-and-wife combinations.

Dale Rynhoud will be running his 29th, Eugene Havenga his 21st and Johan Breydenbach and Anita Botha will be running their 26th consecutive marathon.

Mopeli Lekholoane and Bazil Rozenkrantz are ready to tackle their first Comrades Marathon.

Mopeli Lekholosne is one of the first time participants, and said, “I have been running for quite a few years now, and, even though I believe that I am ready for the Comrades and feel excited, I am also scared. But, I am going to go there, and do the best that I can.”

Mark Steenberg, Dewald Pieterse, Haeley Ryan and Pierre Mouton will be running a back-to-back marathon.

Bazil Rozenkrantz, another first timer, said, “How does one feel about running 90 kilometres? Definitely a bit unsure and very nervous, but I believe everything will go well. I am fit enough, mentally I am prepared, the only thing I am hoping is that my legs don’t let me down!”
