Lesufi: We’ve expelled over 150 learners for misconduct
A string of serious bullying of and attacks on teachers in schools captured on video have been making rounds since the beginning of the year.
Gauteng MEC for Basic Education, Panyaza Lesufi, has indicated in a recent interview that the department has expelled 151 learners for serious misconduct.
It is no secret that both teachers and other vulnerable learners are under siege because of abuse and bullying incidents.

“but it’s an indication that the system together with the enforcement regulations that we have within the education space are capable of handling these issues.”
“What unfortunately harms the entire education system is that when you expel a learner from one school, you are compelled by law to place that learner in another school, which means that learner is able to continue [his or her aberrant behaviour],” Lesufi explained, adding that they have seen proof of learners behaving in the same manner at the schools they are moved to.
As a solution, Lesufi said they were pushing very hard in the new amendments to the education system to have formalised rehabilitation centres which will stipulate periods of rehabilitation that the learner must go through. He said that it is only once the learner has gone through the rehabilitation programme that he/ she can be placed back into the education system, because moving a learner from one school to another is not assisting them.
