The recent outbreak of listeriosis led the Member of the Mayoral Council for Health and Social Development, Dr Mpho Phalatse, to hold an education and training session, aimed mainly at all informal traders. The training session was held at the Ferndale Recreation Centre, 38 Harley Street, Johannesburg on Monday, 19 March.

Phalatse explained how vital it is for informal traders to be trained on listeriosis and the importance of hygiene. They will be trained on how to hygienically prepare and handle food in light of the recent outbreak.

Apparently, informal traders play a crucial role in the City of Johannesburg’s economy and therefore their participation in health education programmes is vital.
