Florida library’s opening hours extended

Library users will be able to browse longer on a Saturday

Eleven of the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Refional libraries will now be open for longer on Saturdays.

During last year’s State of the City address, the CoJ Executive Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba, announced that library hours will be extended, to address the imbalances of the past.

The programme was launched by the Mayor and the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifuba on 3 June last year, and since then 11 908 more users have benefitted. “Libraries are a fountain of knowledge, and with the smart initiatives of the City, users have access to Wi-Fi, connecting them to internet learning resource and potential economic opportunities,” the MMC said.

The hours have been extended at 11 libraries across the CoJ, including Florida, Diepsloot, Ivory Park North, Randburg, Protea North, Jabavu, Sandton, Yeoville, Ennerdal, Orange Farm and Johannesburg City Library.

“Our libraries will now operate for an additional four hours – from 1pm to 5pm – on Saturdays.

This is to allow working residents, who often have no time to visit our libraries, access to these facilities, as well as targeting students from previously forgotten communities who need to study, but find their home environments not conducive to productive studying over the weekends,” she added.

The MMC said that the Library Information Services (LIS) directorate will also be exploring the possibility of increasing the number of libraries that offer extended hours in Matholesville, Kaalfontein, Paterson Park, Drieziek, Naturena and Lehae.
