Welcome relief for motorists

Rand's steady performance against the dollar contributes to the drop in prices.

For most, January is a long month financially as they try to recover from the festive season’s overspending, therefore an announcement about an expected fuel-price drop has been welcomed by motorists.

According to the Automobile Association (AA) the main contributor to a lower fuel price is the rand’s stable performance against the US dollar. “The Rand/ US dollar exchange rate has had one of its flattest periods of trading in recent times. It has traded in a very narrow band between R12,30 and R12,40 to the US currency since the last week of December, bringing some welcome stability,” said the AA.

The petrol price is expected to drop by as much as 41c, the diesel price by 23c and illuminating paraffin by 26c.
