Police warn of motor-theft recovery scam

Florida Police Station has received a number of complaints regarding a police impersonation scam.

Florida Police Station has issued a warning to complainants, particularly victims of vehicle theft, to never deposit any money in order to recover a vehicle, because it’s a scam.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mpho More, said the warning comes after a number of complaints from people who have fallen victim to the scam being perpetrated by apparent police impersonators.

“Florida Police Station is encountering a problem – a number of people whose vehicles have been stolen have come to the station to explain that they’ve received a call from a police officer telling them that their vehicle has been traced and is about to be taken across the border, so they must quickly pay an amount (for example R4 000) so that the police can help with the recovery of the car,” More explained.

More added that this is nothing but a scam! “There is nothing like that happening –those people are impersonating the police,” she said.

She said that the police do not ask for any money during a recovery of a vehicle. “If a vehicle is recovered, the complainant receives a message that says his/ her car has been recovered and the owner must report to the Vehicle Theft Unit. No money will be expected from the complainant in order to get the vehicle back,” More clarified, reiterating that she is pleading with the community not to deposit any money to anyone in order to get their vehicle back.
