Cllr Kruger encourages owner of burnt house to come forward

68-year-old’s house burnt down on 22 December.

Ward 86 councillor, Philip Kruger, has extended a helping hand to Johannes Thanyane from Maraisburg, whose house was destroyed in a mysterious fire shortly before Christmas.

Thanyane, who is currently living with relatives in Soweto, accused the authorities of a lack of urgency and turning a blind eye to his emergency situation.

He told Record he was disappointed with the slow response time of the authorities and believes that if his emergency had been treated with more urgency, the fire could have been controlled.

The 68-year-old’s house burnt down on 22 December. He said he needed City Power to cut off the overhead cables; a report from EMS to establish the cause of the fire, and advice from councillor Kruger about looting that has been occurring at his property.

Kruger, who resumed duties this week after the holiday break, denied ignoring Thanyane. “The gentleman’s claim that I am ignoring him is just not true,” he said.

He advised Thanyane to provide him with his City Power reference number for the power shutdown and the reference number, time, date and phone number used when the fire was reported to EMS.

He also encouraged the Thanyane to contact him directly. “The resident is welcome to contact me directly, or via yourselves [Roodepoort Record].”
