'The boy was stabilised and transported to hospital'

Paramedics from Netcare 911 responded to a near-drowning at a Helderkruin residence at approximately 12 noon yesterday (8 January).

He added that the number of drowning incidents emergency services attend usually increase in summer and over the holiday period. He urged the community to remain vigilant and watchful near potential water hazards. “Unprotected water sources such as water features, jacuzzis, fish ponds, swimming pools and large buckets or containers of water, are all potential hazards for small children who can easily slip away unnoticed,” he said.

He gave the following tips to prevent these incidents:

• Prevent access to these and other hazards with approved nets and fences.

• Children should only swim when supervised by an adult who knows how to swim.

• Be fully prepared. First aid and CPR are skills that can easily be learnt.
