USOW in search of new partnerships

Informal meeting with Hoërskool Florida went well

In an effort to strengthen the United Schools of the West (USOW), an informal meeting was held at Hoërskool Florida, to invite them to join the USOW family.

USOW is an alliance of various schools on the West Rand such as Hoërskool Die Burger and Adelaar, and Tulip, West Ridge, Princess, Allen Glen and Florida Park High Schools. Their vision will centre on unity among the schools in the West Rand under the USOW banner and building a stronger school spirit in the Johannesburg West schools.

USOW is a movement for young leaders by young leaders and was initiated last year, by the former President of Princess High School, Mbalenhle Mkhithi. Initially, USOW started off well and meetings were hosted at various schools forming part of USOW. The meetings consisted of the various Representative Council of Learners (RCL) leaders sharing ideas and principles of leadership, resulting in the empowerment of fellow leaders.

Pule Lemme, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of USOW, met with Henrico Schoeman (Hoërskool Florida’s headboy) to give him some background on the organisation and to ask for their support. “Your school is one of the biggest schools in Johannesburg West, and we want you to accompany us on this walk to start a revolution for our young leaders.

Let’s work together, because together we can move USOW forward and invest in South Africa’s future and youth,” he said.

He added that the organisation will also serve as a platform for young leaders to socialise and build networks among each other.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, USOW was unable to continue with the scheduled meetings, events and activities, but, to ensure these shortcomings do not repeat themselves in 2018, and the years thereafter, the individuals who were part of the organisation this year are willing to come together to work, advise and shadow the aspiring candidates wishing to continue with the movement.

“These individuals are leaders of different schools who sacrificed their time and effort in bringing the organisation into the public eye and made it the well-known structure it is today,” he said.

He concluded the meeting with the following words, “Let’s unite, Hoërskool Florida, and help us make this an epic success. With your great leaders and backing, we can achieve it.”
