According to the councillor for Ward 71, René Benjamin, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has been working with engineers to repair the bridge. “Because of the recent heavy rainfall and hail, the damage to the bridge has worsened and JRA decided that repairs had to be done immediately as the bridge poses a danger to motorists,” she said.

She added that the section between Poplar and Hazel Street will be closed from today, 11 October, as a safety measure in order for JRA to start repairs. “Residents are advised to use Hazel Street through Lindhaven to get to Progress Road or back to Poplar Street. Alternatively, they can also use Rothchild Street to get from South Road to Progress Road,” René said.

She concluded by saying, “The section of the road will remain closed until repairs have been completed and JRA gives the go-ahead that it is safe to use again.
