Community up in arms over latest hijacking

Truck hijacked, but driver is safe

A truck driver trying to be a Good Samaritan and give a lift to a pedestrian, was hijacked in Durban Deep yesterday morning. The incident occurred near the Durban Deep Bowling Club. After the suspect had climbed into the truck, the driver only drove a few metres before the suspect forced him to stop the truck, and threatened him until he climbed out of it. According to eyewitnesses, there was another man who stood in the bushes and watched the incident occur.

Adam Welkom, a Durban Deep resident, said that he knew something was going to happen.

“This has occurred too many times for me not to notice the signs. I immediately knew there was something big happening because there is no other reason why he would be there.

The man was on his phone as if he was signalling and waiting for something.”

After the hijacking occurred, residents contacted law enforcement and also apprehended the suspect who was in the bushes. Police arrived within minutes and the suspect was taken into custody. The truck was found in Soweto and investigations are still under way.
