Checkmate for Maragon team

Chess players get rewarded for hard work

Earlier this month, six Maragon Private Schools U/17 chess players competed in the Gauteng Team Championships. It was held in Pretoria and the format of the competition was Swiss 60/60, which means that they played five rounds of up to two hours each.

The Maragon team drew the first round against Hoërskool Sasolburg and won the next three rounds against Hyde Park High School, Freedom Community College and Hoërskool Dr Johan Jurgens respectively.

The Maragon team reached the semi-final round of their age category where they lost against Carel de Wet Technical High School. This meant that they finished the championships in fourth position among the 17 league winners in the province.
