National Braai Day

Celebrate Heritage Day around the fire on #NationalBraaiDay

Although 24 September is officially National Heritage Day, it is also known as National Braai Day and all South Africans are encouraged to light a fire and enjoy a braai – in true South African style.

National Braai Day was first celebrated on 24 September 1995. The Government set this day aside for South Africans to celebrate our rich cultural heritage, and the National Braai Day initiative aims to position National Heritage Day as an annual day of celebration for the whole South Africa.

A braai is common to all South Africa’s races, languages and religions, although it may be known by many other names, including Chisa Nyama, Braai and Ukosa – to name just a few. And, although the ingredients may differ, the one thing that never changes is that when we have something to celebrate, we light fires and prepare great feasts.

This holiday can be compared to other celebrations by other leading nations of the world, like Thanksgiving for Americans, St Patrick’s Day for the Irish, Bastille Day for the French and Australia Day for Australians – that’s why all South Africans are encouraged to unite around fires, share their heritage and wave the South African flag high on this day.

So, what are you waiting for? Light the fire, gather your friends and family, add meat and cold beverages and celebrate National Braai Day!
