National Comic Book Day

Read some classic comic books on #NationalComicBookDay

Every year on 25 September, comic book readers, collectors (pannapictagraphists), lovers and fans celebrate National Comic Book Day, and, because the creator of this day is unknown it is an unofficial national holiday.

A comic book is also known as a comic magazine and was first popularised in the United States in the form of comic art that was illustrated by sequential panels representing individual scenes. The panels are often accompanied by descriptive prose and written narrative with the dialogue usually contained in a balloon form (which is emblematic of the comics art form).

A comic book titled Famous Funnies appeared in the United States for the first time in 1933 and is believed to be the first real comic book. This book contained a reprint of earlier newspaper comic strips which had established many of the storytelling devices used in comics.

The first comic book that was sold contained reprinted humorous (comic) strips, hence the name comic book. But, not all comic books are humourous, as they actually feature stories from all genres.

In 1896 a comic book magazine called McFadden’s Row of Flats featured the story of The Yellow Kid. It was a black and white publication consisting of 196 pages. It sold for 50 cents in the United States.

Celebrate National Comic Book Day by picking up a comic book to read and use #NationalComicBookDay to post on social media.
