National Talk Like A Pirate Day

“Yar harrr! Ahoy there, mateys! It be Talk Like A Pirate Day and that means it’s time for pillaging and imbibing of rum!”
National Talk Like A Pirate Day is celebrated annually on 19 September. This day is dedicated to keeping the piratical language – and more importantly – the tradition, alive.
In recent years, pirates have become all the rage and out of that rage a completely insane and impractical idea was born. A group of men were playing racquetball on 6 June 1995 and were shouting encouragement to each other throughout the game.
On this particular day, without knowing why, they started shouting piratical slang at each other and it took on a life of its own. By the end of the game they realised the necessity of establishing a holiday encouraging the use of such fine vocabulary.
And because they were in need of a date for this fine holiday, they negotiated with each other, eventually settling on the birthday of the ex-wife of one of the group. After this decision was made, they celebrated this holiday for seven years, in relative obscurity.
They then happened to find the email address of a syndicated columnist and author named Dave Barry, and contacted him. Needless to say, he began promoting the holiday, and the rest – as they say – is history.
National Talk Like a Pirate Day became quite a hit, and people now celebrate it year after year.
To celebrate is as easy as spending a day in the tropics. All you need to do is gather your friends and use words like “Yar!”, “Ahoy”, “Matey”. But, most importantly, do not forget to enjoy some fruity drinks with umbrellas in them to ensure you are at your piratey best.
There are songs to be sung, and wenches to be clenched at backyard barbecues, complete with grilled pineapple and an inappropriate amount of pure sugar-cane rum, so have a glorious Talk Like A Pirate Day!
