#CagedGirls: The plot thickens

Ipid should be investigating, said lawyer.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Makgamatha of the Roodepoort Police, who has been tasked with investigating the ‘caged girls’ drama, the investigation has reached a stalemate.

He ascribes this to a lack of cooperation from the parents of the girls. He explained that when he approached the parents to take their statements, he was told to send his cellphone number to them so that their lawyer could set up an appointment. But this has yet to happen, and the investigation cannot continue and will most likely have to be abandoned.

However, the family’s lawyer, James Human, has said that according to him the case is a long way from being resolved. He said he has prohibited his clients from making statements since doing so is premature – because they are in the early stages of a civil action against the Ministry of Police.

“I am not interested in their [the Roodepoort Police’s] investigation anyway because the Independent Police Investigative Directorate should be investigating them, not them investigating themselves,” said Human.
