Cricket derby thrills

Win for Florida Cricket

The local West Rand cricket derby was on as the U/15 players of Florida Cricket Club took on Delfos Cricket Club in the Lenasia Premier League (LPL). This was the first match of the tournament for the teams which made proceedings exciting for fans that came out in their numbers.

Florida is the defending champions of the tournament, having won it on both previous occasions.

Delfos won the toss and elected to bat first but things did not go well for them as Florida were charged and ready to go. Florida bowler Drico Kriel sent Delfos’ opening batsmen Zaahid Williams and Naasir Abrahams packing in one over.

Three run-outs did not help the Delfos cause as they were limping without many runs on the board.

The bowling of Johan Mahne and Joshua Petzer, who each got a wicket, strangled the run opportunities for their opponents even further.

Delfos had to settle for 74 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 14 overs and had to hope their bowling and fielding would come up strong. However, it was not to be as Florida steamrolled their way to victory with the loss of just two wickets.

JP King and Darian de Bruyn opened the batting and together made 37 runs before JP was caught for just 11 runs. He hit two fours from 13 balls.

Darian continued his fine batting as he was joined at the crease by Mohamed Zaid Ishmail.

Darian steered his team on the course to victory but was bowled out just runs away. He lost his wicket at 35 runs in 33 overs, hitting six 4s during his innings.

With just four runs needed to win, Johan Mahne walked to the crease and along with Zaid, took the team to victory. Johan registered one run from six balls while Zaid scored 10 runs from 15 balls. Florida reached 75 runs in 12.3 overs.
