Proposed cemetery to go ahead

Environmental authorisation granted by GDARD

Earlier this year, the Record reported on Calgro M3’s proposal for a cemetery development in the Grobler Park area.

It was reported that the company has appointed Envirolution Consulting to conduct an environmental impact study which would be submitted to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural (GDARD), as the land on which the development was to take place forms part of a wetland area.

“The completed studies will be submitted to the GDARD for consideration to decide if Calgro M3 will be granted the rights to develop the proposed cemetery,” said Lynne Bothma, spokesperson for Calgro M3.

On 10 August, an email was received from Andrisha Govender, an Environmental Scientist from Envirolution Consulting, stating that Calgro M3 has received environmental authorisation from the GDARD for the proposed cemetery. The authorisation was effective from 4 August.

According to the report, the GDARD was satisfied that, subject to compliance with the conditions in the environmental authorisation, the authorised project will not conflict with general objectives of integrated environmental management, and that any potentially negative impact on the environment, resulting from the project, could be mitigated to acceptable levels.

The GDARD stated that they were satisfied that all the correct procedures were followed and the report submitted for consideration was found to be in order.
