NPO lends a helping hand

Non-profit organisation (NPO) Boere Gemeenskap Transvaal recently visited the areas of Newlands, Claremont and Vrededorp bearing gifts. Under their outreach banner “Project JHB”, their aim was to give to the poorest of the poor in these areas, those who sleep in garages without doors and homes with no furniture or food. Most of the children who grow up in such environments do not attend school as their parents cannot afford school uniform or the fees. The children that do go to school do so on empty stomachs.

The NPO was stationed at Hoërskool Die Burger and distributed food, blankets, clothing, shoes, children’s toys and toiletries.

“The Newlands community is one of the poorest areas, not only on the West Rand, but the province. Most churches in the area cannot help them either, as they struggle to survive as well.

When the parents are unemployed, the children suffer too,” said Leon Cronje from the NPO.

After a busy morning selecting what they wanted and needed from the variety of donations brought for them, the children and adults were treated to boerewors rolls, hot dogs, cool drinks and food parcels.

The NPO will now be running a soup kitchen at the high school’s tuck-shop to assist the children and elderly. However, the tuck-shop will need renovating as well as tiling and palisade fencing. For more information or to assist, please contact Leon on 073 631 7914.
