Action cricket players rewarded
Six players from Western Gauteng team in contention for SA selection
The Western Gauteng Action Cricket team has achieved good results at the recent Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) in Pietermaritzburg.
“The U/14 team won a bronze medal and the U/16’s finished fourth among the nine provinces.
From these two groups, six players were selected to qualify for the South African team that will tour to Dubai in 2018,” said a very proud Charlotte Fritz, the team’s sports coordinator.
Four of these players were selected from the U/14 team and two from the U/16 team. They are Billy van Zyl, Zian Bench, Ruben van Tonder, Reggie Lethbridge, Daniel Samll and Bertus Koekemoer. “What makes this achievement even more unique is that two of the U/14 players have been playing the game for just more than a month,” she said.
The six players will go to a training camp later this year where 20 players will be selected for next year’s SA team. “There are usually about 40 players at this camp, from which 20 are chosen. Just to be invited to the camp is already a big honour, because it shows that your talent and hard work are being noticed. We are very proud of these players, because it’s been a while since the Western Gauteng team has been awarded this honour, and it just proves that perseverance always pays off, ” Charlotte said with a big smile.
The action cricket team practises at the Hillfox and Fourways Arenas, and invites those interested to join them. “We practise on Sunday afternoons and play league matches on Thursdays and Fridays. I believe there are many talented players out there and the opportunities offered by this sport, are endless. It is also a nice family sport and everyone between the ages of six and 60 years is welcome. It’s not just for boys, girls are more than welcome to join, “she said.
