Pass marks to be dropped again

It has been reported that Hubert Mweli, Director-General of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), has suggested that the pass marks for Grades10 and 11 learners be lowered again.
He also indicated that passing maths will no longer be a prerequisite to pass a year.
Mweli’s suggestions are as follows:
• Pass mark for a home language to drop from 50 per cent to 40 per cent
• Pass mark for mathematics to drop from 40 per cent to 30 per cent
• Learners will be required to achieve only 30 per cent in two other subjects, other than mathematics
• Pass mark for all remaining subjects will be 40 per cent
