National Onion Rings Day

Enjoy a batter-dipped, deep-fried treat on #NationalOnionRingsDay

22 June is National Onion Rings Day and recognises the batter-dipped, deep-fried bite of deliciousness that runs rings around other appetisers.

Although fried onion rings can be found in almost every country around the world, no-one knows exactly where they originated.

Here are some interesting facts about this delicious snack:

• John Mollard’s 1802 cookbook – The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined – contains a recipe called Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese. This recipe suggests cutting onions into one centimetre rings, dipping them into a batter made of flour, cream, salt, pepper and Parmesan cheese and then frying them in boiling lard. It also recommends serving this treat with a sauce made of melted butter and mustard.

• Although not claiming to be the originator of the recipe, some believe that a recipe for French-fried Onions appeared in the Middletown, NY Daily Times on 13 January 1910.

• One of the restaurant chains claiming to be the inventor of onion rings, is The Pig Stand, which was founded in the early 1920s in Texas.

• In 1933, a Crisco advertisement in the New York Times Magazine featured a recipe for French-fried onion rings that are dipped in milk and then dredged with flour.

• The A&W restaurant has been credited with the popularisation of onion rings in fast-food restaurants during the 1960s.

To celebrate today is easy – just visit your favourite onion ring serving restaurant, place your order and enjoy a serving of this delicious treat.
