Families that work together, shine together
On 10 June, the Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) Claremont Community Project held its annual Family Day event, and as usual, it was a roaring success.
There were more than 200 mouths to feed that day. Forty-five families, made up of 48 adults and 112 children registered for the day, and 50 volunteers ensured there was a happy buzz throughout the day.
According to social worker Hannie Reyneke, the goal of the SAVF Claremont was to knit families together. “This year’s theme was ‘Let us shine together’, and to put that into practice we hosted various activities throughout the day. The families made lighthouses out of waste products and were shown how to grow spinach in a plastic milk bottle. We also organised a ‘win a minute’ event which created lots of laughter and fun and showed people that they need each other to achieve their goals,” Hannie said. The families then joined an energetic Zumba dance, led by Kitso.
Everybody enjoyed chocolate muffins during the break and boerewors rolls for lunch. Each family received a crocheted or knitted blanket donated by Carolyn Steyn, the ambassador for 67 Blankets, and made by the Samro Knitwits. They also received one large household item donated by Verimark and the smaller children each received a hand-knitted jersey from the Triomf NG Church. There were gifts and snacks for all the children too.
The chairperson of the SAVF Board, Irene Smit, said she wanted to thank all the donors as well as Giancarlo Filomeno from CJS Security; Kobus Herbst from 33 on First Guesthouse in Melville; Beeld Kinderfonds; Marina Salt; the Kruger, Smit and Fortar families for the donations for the Family Day, and all the other volunteers who assisted at the event.
“We also want to thank everybody involved, including the two Wesbank volunteers for their support,” she said.
