Gauteng Winter Games kicks off in Florida

Pretoria Technical School to represent Gauteng at National Winter Games

The sport grounds at Hoërskool Florida was the place to be during the recent Provincial Winter Games, which was hosted by the Gauteng Department for Sport and Recreation.

The day featured boys and girls U/15 rugby teams from General Smuts Secondary School, Pretoria Technical School, Queens High School, Belvedere Secondary School, Kondelani Secondary School as well as Thutong Secondary School.

These teams participated at district and regional level and made it through to the provincial play-offs. “Today, we have four boys’ teams and three girls’ teams participating for the honour of representing their province at the National Winter Games which will be held in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Timmy Goodwin from the Golden Lions Rugby Union, who was the convener on the day.

These games are aimed at schools who have four rugby teams or less, and have just started playing the game. “Girls’ rugby has been around in schools for the past four years, but it is much harder to convince them to take part in the game. Together with the rugby unions, we want to encourage girls to take up the sport at a much earlier age, as there are many opportunities for them these days,” Timmy said.

Pretoria Technical School, in red and blue strip, battled in the final with Queens High School in green.

The boys’ final was played between Queens High School and Pretoria Technical School (PTS) for the second consecutive year. This year, PTS emerged victorious, and they did not only earn bragging rights, but also the opportunity to represent their province in the national games. The girls’ final was between Queens High School and Thutong Secondary School, with Thutong emerging as victors.

“The quality of the rugby played has definitely improved, especially the girls. We wish the teams going to KwaZulu-Natal all the best for their participation in the national competition. They must remember that they will not only be representing themselves and their schools, but the whole of Gauteng,” Timmy concluded.
