Fear mongering social media post a hoax

Uncertain where these posts originate from.

Whether it is innocence or ignorance, or someone with an agenda to sow panic and division, a post that has turned out to be a hoax has once again surfaced on social media.

According to a post that is enthusiastically being circulated, a mass child abduction is imminent. The post claims that a warning has been sent out on all major news outlets. The post says it will happen “tomorrow” but has been circulating for a week, so it is uncertain when “tomorrow” is.

The Record contacted the police to establish whether there was any truth in the “warning”. But according to Florida Police’s spokesperson, Mpho More, it is “nonsense”. “If it was the truth the police would be the first to issue it as an official police communication. People should refrain from circulating these posts as they could have ugly repercussions,” she said, referring to the current violence in Kwa-Mashu which erupted after the community took a hoax social media post as the truth.
