WhatsApp notice not from JMPD

Residents urged not to keep sharing message

“JMPD did not issue any notices about new and increased fines and we are not sure where they originated. We urge all residents to not share these messages on any social media platform,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

Motorists have been expressing concerns about a message being spread on WhatsApp involving the JMPD. The message reads, “Hi all, heard on radio this morning that if you are talking on your mobile phone while driving, your phone will be taken away and you will have to pay a R2500-00 fine to get it back. Also, if you do not have your driver’s licence with you, you will be taken into custody and have to pay R1000-00 before they release you. This is with immediate effect.” The message also urges everyone to share it with their friends and loved ones.

The Record has also become aware of information being shared on Facebook about new fine amounts and offences that can lead to your arrest.

This information was sent to Wayne for comment. He said that it is also incorrect. “Although we do know that fines for different offences will be increased, this is not a JMPD notice and the details cannot be confirmed,” he concluded.
