The road was closed for approximately an hour, while rescuers used the Jaws of Life to extricate one of the victims from the wreck and allow paramedics to attend to the patients.

“The 43-year-old male driver of one of the vehicles unfortunately sustained severe injuries and died on the scene. He was declared dead by the paramedics,” said Dollman.

Two others, a male and female, only sustained moderate injuries, and were treated at the scene by the paramedics, before being transported to hospital for further medical care.

The cause of the incident is unknown, but officials from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department were on scene to conduct investigations.
