Roodepoort Police honours mothers
Women's network members spoilt for Mother's Day
Members of the Roodepoort Police Women’s Network came together for their annual Mother’s Day lunch on the afternoon of 11 May.
According to Angie Arjuna, the organiser of the charity group, the network consists of members from all the different units of the Roodepoort Police.
“All of us present today, are mothers. We do not always get the opportunity to be together and treat ourselves,” she said.
Angie added that they usually invite the day mothers from Dorah’s Ark to join them, but unfortunately this year they could not attend. “We really missed Mama Dorah this year, but after she passed away earlier this year, they are battling to find someone to watch the children, and they could not join us. Hopefully they will be able to join us next year,” said Angie.
The women’s network is a charity organisation within the police that focuses on women and children’s issues. “We usually host events at Easter, Christmas and other major holidays, where we hand out presents and treats. We also provide food and clothing to women and children’s shelters,” she said.
The organisation also undertakes visits to informal settlements to teach the children not to be scared of the police. “We sometimes visit these settlements in uniform, and educate the children about the police. We aim to help them realise the police are not always bad and they can always ask us for help,” said Angie.
She said that Steers is the annual sponsor for their Mother’s Day lunch and they are very thankful to them. “People forget that we are also mothers, and this event today, was to treat ourselves,” she concluded.
