Hoërskool Die Adelaar recently hosted the United Schools of the West Rand (Usow) meeting. The partnership between Hoërskole Die Burger, Adelaar and Nic Diederics, and West Ridge, Florida Park, Tulip, Allen Glen and Princess High Schools has been making steady progress. With a newly elected executive set to carve a path for the school year, the meeting discussed a variety of issues that affect learners and teachers alike.
Teacher Liaison Officer, Mark January, was pleased by the enthusiasm shown by the learners to tackle the problems facing the organisation.
“In these meetings, they discuss the way to build a better community and focus more on social issues which plague them at this stage of their lives. It is also important to look at learners with behavioural problems and how to integrate them into the school system in a positive manner. Working with the BOSASA Youth Development Centres, which deal with problem children and rehabilitate them, will assist us in getting learners with problems back on the right track,” he said.
Usow also plans sports and cultural activities between the schools to foster a better relationship between the learners.
“Our core purpose is to build up positive bonds and partnerships between the schools, having positive rivalries which will elevate participants in a positive manner,” said Mark.
Some of Usow’s goals for the year include rooting out corruption at the schools, raising funds for the schools and raising academic standards, to achieve better results.
