National Plant A Flower Day

Beautify your garden on #NationalPlantAFlowerDay

12 March is National Plant A Flower Day, and is celebrated annually. As botanist Luther Burbank said, “Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful. They are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul.”

Every year this day is dedicated to planting flowers and flower gardening has become a hobby to many – young and old.

It is good to know the climate you live in before you choose perennials (plants that grow back annually) and annuals (those requiring replanting every year).

In winter seeds can be planted in a small container and set up in a sunny window. These seedlings can be moved outside as soon as the weather improves. The soil should be kept moist at all times – but not wet.

The instructions on the seed packet should be followed at all times to ensure proper germination. Get out those seed catalogues and start planning your next flower garden.

If you live in a summer-rainfall area, sow some seeds, such as Namaqualand daisies, sweet peas, poppies, primula, foxgloves, hollyhock and larkspur. Don’t be scared to sow the flowers you love – it is easy and success is guaranteed if you just follow the instructions on the seed packet. Nurture those blossoms into a brilliant blaze for the whole neighbourhood to enjoy.

To celebrate today, here are some tips on how to start your own flower garden:

– If you are not ready yet to tear up a patch of your lawn, a good way to start a flower garden is starting with a potted one. Although they require more watering, the overall care is less.

– Select plants that will grow well in the spot where it would be placed. Some plants grow well in the shade while others prefer sun. Other plants love both!

– Gardeners who prefer perennial gardens have to thin their flower beds every couple of years.

– Local garden centres and nurseries stock plants you that grow well in your area – do not be afraid to ask them questions.

Gardeners also love to share their extra bulbs and seeds with those who are still new to gardening. So, if you know someone with a green thumb you might just get some free plants, advice and a budding friendship!

To celebrate today, let us all work together by planting a flower and helping to make the world a more beautiful place.
