Rain spoils planned clean-up in Davidsonville

Planned operations will go ahead as soon as weather clears

The residents of Davidsonville were very excited about the planned activities for the week of 20–24 February.

The activities, which were planned by the councillor for Ward 71, René Benjamin, included visits from municipal entities such as Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), Pikitup, City Power, Johannesburg Water (JW) as well as Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). “The reason for the visits was to try to motivate residents to become actively involved in taking care of their neighbourhood. This clean-up will have residents working alongside the different entities in order for them to start taking ownership of their community,” René said.

According to René, the JCPZ had three days of grass-cutting and resident education planned, JRA would do some road marking, maintenance and storm water drain cleaning, and Pikitup had the whole week set aside for various activities.

The councillor, René Benjamin, also assisted residents like Elizabeth Jacobs with queries.

City Power was also lined up to replace and repair broken or faulty streetlights to increase visibility in certain high-risk areas as well as repair some damaged electrical boxes in the area. “The broken streetlights are a big concern for residents because of all the drug-related issues in the area. If visibility is increased, they feel safer,” René said.

The many sewerage issues were also on the list, and JW would visit the area to sort this out. Unfortunately, most of these activities were postponed because of the adverse weather conditions, but, Benjamin assured everyone that, as soon as the weather clears, the activities will commence.

Stella Wilson, the Regional Manager at Pikitup Roodepoort, echoed Benjamin’s sentiment, and said her team was very eager to be part of the week’s activities. “We have a group of educators that will visit residents and inform them of our various services, like our bulk waste management, recycling and garden sites, We will also educate them on illegal dumping, what it is and how to report it. We also do not issue fines on these campaigns, we only create awareness,” she said.

Stella concluded by saying, “We want to encourage residents to rise up and stand together in an effort to create a cleaner neighbourhood.”
