Update: Day two of rescue attempt still unsuccessful

Boat was used.

Yesterday (31 January) the second attempt to rescue a gander, who is weakening by the hour due to his legs being entangled in fish gut, was made at Florida Lake.

On the first day Taren Welthagen, director of Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw), and her colleague could not catch him because he kept flying away. Yesterday he made their task difficult by taking to the water. A boat was brought in to ease their dogged effort but unfortunately the boat capsized at one stage with the two activists ending up in the water. “This was an unpleasant experience as sewage is flowing into the lake. There were also other objects drifting past us such as tampons,” said Welthagen. They aborted their attempt at about 6pm.

The gander and goose have a family of nine goslings. It is essential to save the gander as geese mate for life and both parents raise the goslings.

Today the team will attempt to catch the bird by building an old-fashioned trap.

The community is holding thumbs for these passionate activists to succeed.
