Sixteen people were injured this morning (27 January), several of them seriously, when a bakkie and a taxi collided on Christiaan de Wet Road.
ER24 paramedics, along with other services, found the taxi against the roadside barrier. The bakkie was standing in the middle of the road.
Several passengers from the taxi were walking around on the scene.
Upon closer inspection, paramedics found two men lying trapped inside the front of the taxi. ER24 paramedics, along with provincial services personnel, used specialised rescue tools to free both men from the vehicle. They had numerous injuries and were in a critical condition.
Fourteen other occupants had injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Paramedics treated them and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions. The patients were transported to various hospitals for further treatment.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
The road was closed for a substantial period of time.
