Dog Poisoned: Tips on what to do

Reports continue to pour in warning against dog poison.

An increase in criminal activity over the last few weeks has seen the increase in dog poisoning reports. This has prompted Roodepoort Police to come out and urge the community to report any cases of dog poisoning so they can be investigated. The most recent report came earlier this week when a dog was allegedly poisoned in Culemborg Street. Residents in the street have been warned to remain vigilant regarding activity on their property.

The most common poison being used is Aldicarb or Temik, also known as Two Step. It’s a black or grey granular substance and is usually put in meat or bread and thrown over the perimeter wall.

Symptoms of poisoning are numerous and include profuse twitching of the skin, disorientation, vomiting, confusion and excessive salivation.

Poisoned animals should reach a veterinarian as soon as possible. Homeowners are advised that they can dispose of toxins and contaminated material by sweeping, picking up the bait and washing the area with household detergents, especially dish-washing liquid, since the toxins are usually fat-soluble. Toxins and contaminated materials should be double-bagged and veterinarians should be able to advise owners on how to dispose of them.

Personal Safety:

• Avoid contact with saliva, bodily fluids or other excrement.

• Wear gloves.

• Your dog is in distress and might show signs of aggression, thus be careful.

• Do not put your finger inside its mouth for it might bite.

Immediate Treatment:

• Keep the dog warm with a blanket.

• Check the yard thoroughly for more poisoned bait.

• Get your dog to the vet immediately – many dogs die within 20 minutes.
