Crafty seniors rock market

Annual arts and crafts market hosted at Tornado Park Retirement Village

The hall was filled with colourful products displayed on tables and the senior citizens were eager and excited to tell you exactly what they were selling.

All the crafts displayed at the annual arts and crafts market held on 3 December at the Tornado Park Retirement Village in Georginia were hand-made by the residents of the various centres under the management of Roodepoort Cared for the Aged (RCA). The RCA manages nine retirement villages and old age homes – four in Roodepoort and five in Soweto.

The event was organised by Dennis Venter, a social worker at the organisation. “This event is part of our project called an Act of Ageing, where the aim is to keep our senior citizens – 60 years and older – interested and active,” he said.

According to Dennis, although the arts and craft market is a fundraising event, the RCA only takes a 15 per cent admin fee from the money raised by the sales. “The other 85 per cent goes to the sellers’ pockets,” said Dennis.

The handcrafted items included jewellery, sewn and knitted items, as well as fruit and vegetables from the garden on the premises. The garden is managed by 70-year-old Spencer Petersen.

“We did have quite a few people coming to the market and buying the products, but we would have loved some more support from the community,” Dennis concluded.
