National Eat A Red Apple Day

Eat a red apple (or two) on #NationalEatARedAppleDay

‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is a saying that has been in use since the beginning of time, and today is the perfect day to put that theory to the test.

1 December is National Eat A Red Apple Day – a day the healthiest fruit available in nature’s pantry is celebrated.

Apples are the oldest fruits grown and consumed by humans and are thought to be native to the Central Asian region. Today, more than 10 000 varieties of apples are grown all over the world and they come in a variety of colours – the most common being red, green and golden.

Apples are very low in calories, high in vitamin C and fibre and their skins are full of antioxidants, making them the healthiest fruit known to man. Some of the benefits of eating apples include lowering bad cholesterol levels, as well as lowering the risk of certain types of cancer. It is also said that the apples from trees grown from seeds tend to be very bitter and sour while sweet apples are grown by grafting.

It is easy to celebrate National Eat A Red Apple Day – with a lot of red apples of course! You can have it in a variety of ways. Have some caramelised apples with your french toast or pancakes. Make a walnut and apple salad for lunch, or serve apples with your pork chops for dinner. But, the most important course is apple pie for dessert!
