Roodepark’s debut market a huge success

The learners from Roodepark School recently held their very first arts and crafts market where they showed off their handiwork and skills.

According to the school principal, René van der Merwe the debut market was a huge success.

“This was a trial run and we will have a meeting to decide if it should become an annual event. But, if I look at the excitement it created among those who attended it looks like there will be more markets,” she said.

The market was an opportunity for the learners to help raise money for the school by selling their handcrafted products. “All the monies received from the market will be used at the school, either by upgrading the workshops, machinery or helping some of the learners who are unable to pay for sport tours or school fees. We will also use it to help train learners for the world of work,” René said.

The arts and crafts market ran from 2 to 5 November, with different events to help market it. It started off with an open day for new learners and their parents, as well as a motivational speaker who addressed guest schools from the area. The next event was a concert for the senior citizens, with coffee and cake after which they had an opportunity to visit the market to buy some gifts for their grandchildren. The next events included a Christmas party where gifts were handed out to the children, and a barbecue and carols by candlelight. The last event was a ladies tea with a guest speaker and singer.

The whole week was also greatly supported by the public.
