Police finally take kidnapped baby allegations seriously

Investigation to be launched.

More than a month after the Mncube family’s one-day-old baby boy was kidnapped, Sophiatown Police Station has indicated that they will be investigating the allegations against the investigation officer’s (IO) sloppy, non-existent police work.

Brigadier Crafford, station commander at Sophiatown said “We as the police take these allegations seriously; therefore a disciplinary enquiry, which is currently under investigation, has been registered against the IO who was handling the case.

The Branch Commander of the Family, Child and Sexual Offence Protection (FCS) unit, Colonel Ximba, is now personally dealing with the case.”

“Colonel Ximba will follow up on all leads, including video footage if it is available.

The complainant indicated to the police that she will not be able to compile identity kit pictures of the suspects to help us in the investigation.

The victim was offered the necessary trauma counselling and the necessary victim support was given to them,” he concluded.

The baby was kidnapped on 21 September, after his mother was given a lift by the suspects from the hospital where he was born, to Florida.

The investigation has thus far been marred by a litany of errors and the gross misconduct of the IO.
