Only treats – no tricks

Kids treated to a trick-or-treat party in Discovery

Scary clowns, witches, vampires and pumpkins all came to join the trick-or-treat party on 29 October.

The Discovery Community Forum hosted their annual trick-or-treat event in Discovery and over 200 children – with the youngest only being six weeks old – attended.

Everyone gathered at the First Scout Hall where some last-minute make-up were done before the real fun started. The children – and some adults – were all dressed to impress and very excited to hit the streets to score some candy.

The transport for the evening included bakkies, trucks, police vehicles as well as emergency vehicles. To the sound of sirens, the trick-or-treat party kicked off.

The Discovery Community Forum (DCF), in conjunction with the police closed some of the roads in the area to ensure the trick-or-treaters were safe. The houses where the children stopped by for their treats were mostly DCF members who hd volunteered to participate.

Hennie Matthews from the DCF said, “We host this event every year in an attempt to give the children a chance to participate in safety. It is an opportunity for them to take to streets and run free. This is our way of giving our time to the kids and the neighbourhood.”

All the sweet treats that were given out were collected and supplied by the DCF. They also asked for donations of lollipops from everyone attending the event which they donate for a good cause. “We give all these lollipops to Avril Botha who gives them out to underprivileged children,” said Hennie.

The evening’s activities were concluded with a prize for the best-dressed girl and boy. After the prize-giving, the children were sent home with hearts filled with happiness and bags filled with candy.
