Scooter accident update: Rider to spend months in hospital

Doctors still undecided over amputation issue.

According to Anna Marie van den Berg, the mother of 20-year-old Hendrik who was hit by a truck while riding on his scooter on Tuesday (25 October), doctors have yet to decide whether his leg will be amputated. However, she said things seem ‘positive’.

Every second day Hendrik, who is in a induced coma, has his leg cleaned and dead tissue removed in theatre. He has a surgical drain in his leg to rid his leg of built-up fluids. This will also help to reduce bleeding.

Anna Marie said the colour of the leg is improving, but according to the doctor it will be some time before they will be able to establish whether the damaged nerves are healing. Only then a decision will be made about amputating his leg or not. It is expected that Hendrik will spend ‘months in hospital’.

Hendrik was airlifted to Netcare Milpark Hospital after the accident.
