Are we there yet?

Still not there yet.

While the country’s attention is focused on #FeesMustFall and Zuptagate, a bakkie with a mountain-sized load of goods including kitchen sinks and a rugby field or two was impounded in Stormill.

The incident occurred on the morning of 19 October. The bakkie was heading to Malawi, which is 23 hours and 1 971 km away.

The bakkie, which had a load of more than two metres in height and was not roadworthy, was travelling along Main Reef Road during the night of Tuesday 18 October, when it sustained a rear tyre puncture. The driver went to ask for assistance, and the bakkie’s occupants were forced to sleep in it as they waited in vain for the driver to return. On Wednesday morning, when a number of Johannesburg Metro Police officers were patrolling Main Reef Road, they saw the bakkie, which was blocking traffic. The officers then proceeded to investigate. Acting Sergeant Neliswa Tentu, who was on the scene, said they unloaded the bakkie and then impounded it.

“Nobody was arrested because the driver still had not returned. The vehicle was not roadworthy and it was impeding traffic so it was impounded,” she said.

A truck was then called by the desolate passengers who loaded all of their goods onto it, and proceeded onwards to the border.
